How to Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery: A Patient Checklist
By Dr. Raheel Thobhani, DMD
You've had your consultation, and your custom treatment plan is in place. The day of your dental implant surgery is approaching. This is an exciting step toward restoring your smile, health, and confidence! While it's completely normal to feel a mix of anticipation and nervousness, being well-prepared is the best way to ensure your surgery day is smooth, comfortable, and stress-free.
At Smyrna Dental Studio, we believe that a successful outcome begins long before you sit in the dental chair. This guide will serve as your comprehensive checklist for preparing for dental implant surgery, ensuring you enter your appointment feeling calm and confident.
Your Pre-Surgery Checklist: The Week and Day Before
Proper preparation can make a significant difference in your comfort and recovery. Here’s a simple timeline to follow.
In the Week Before Your Surgery:
Confirm Your Transportation: Your top priority is to arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to our Smyrna office and return you home afterward. You will not be able to drive after receiving sedation.
Go Grocery Shopping: Stock your pantry and refrigerator with soft foods and liquids that you can enjoy for the first few days after surgery. Great options include yogurt, smoothies, protein shakes, soup, mashed potatoes, and applesauce.
Fill Your Prescriptions: We may prescribe medications such as antibiotics to take before your surgery or pain relievers for after. Fill these prescriptions ahead of time so they are ready when you need them.
Review Medication Instructions: We will discuss your current medications with you. You may need to temporarily stop taking certain medications, like blood thinners, for a few days before your procedure.
The 24 Hours Before Your Surgery:
Follow Fasting Instructions: If you are scheduled for IV sedation, you must stop eating and drinking anything (including water) for at least eight hours before your appointment. This is critical for your safety.
Avoid Alcohol: Do not consume alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your surgery, as it can interfere with anesthesia.
Get a Good Night's Sleep: A well-rested body is better prepared for a smooth procedure and recovery.
The Morning of Your Surgery:
Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you are receiving IV sedation, please wear a top with short sleeves to allow for easy access to the IV line.
Skip the Accessories: Please refrain from wearing makeup, jewelry, or contact lenses to your appointment.
Brush and Floss Thoroughly: Arrive with a clean mouth. Brush and floss your teeth as you usually would, but refrain from using mouthwash.
FAQs: Your Surgery Preparation Questions Answered
Q1: What happens if I forget to fast before my IV sedation? For your safety, you must call our office immediately to let us know. We will need to reschedule your surgery. Undergoing sedation on a full stomach can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.
Q2: Can I drive myself home if I only have local anesthesia? While you may be legally able to drive after only local anesthesia, we still highly recommend having a driver. You may feel sore, tired, or simply not up to driving after a surgical procedure. It's always safest to let someone else handle the transportation so you can focus on resting.
Q3: What should I eat for my last meal before my fasting period begins? A light, balanced meal that is not overly greasy or heavy is a good choice. Your body will process this more easily. Avoid a large, heavy meal right before you are scheduled to begin fasting.
Q4: I'm feeling very anxious about the surgery. What can I do? It's completely normal to feel anxious. First, please communicate these feelings to our team. We are here to support you. Remember that we offer sedation options specifically designed to help you relax and have a comfortable, stress-free experience. On the morning of your surgery, you can also practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help calm your nerves.
